Dungeonbowl Star Players

DUNGEONBOWL: ASTROGRANITE EDITION

Expanded rules and hobby ideas for the board game of dungeon fantasy football

Dungeonbowl Star Players

Star Players are the legendary heroes of Dungeonbowl, players of such caliber that almost all fans know their names and personal histories. At their level of fame and popularity, rather than being signed on to play for one specific team only, Star Players operate on a game-per-game contract basis, often moving between different teams as they please, or moving in and out of retirement to play in specific high-profile games.

Drafting Star Players

If you wish to incorporate Star Players into your Dungeonbowl games by adding them to your teams, there are several different ways of doing this. Four of the easist methods are outlined below. The first two involve the coaches individually selecting and hiring specific Stars as though they were regular players, and the last two involve the coaches sitting down together before the game and distributing Stars between them in the fashion of a mini-game.

  • The Straightforward Method: Treat hiring Star Players like hiring any other player, where the coach has to pay the full cost of the Star Player to add them permanently to their team. With this method, the coach may only hire Stars that will play for his College, but he may hire as many Stars as he can afford.

  • The Freebooter Method: Star Players can only be hired for one game at a time, and the cost to have a Star play for one game is half of their normal cost, rounded up to the nearest 10.000 gold. The coach may only hire Stars that will play for his College, but he may hire as many Stars as he can afford. This method only works for league games, not one-off games (at least star players become a very very good deal otherwise).

  • The Bidding Method: Each coach gets an additional 200.000 gold before the start of the game, and before building a team in the case of a one-off game. This gold can only be used to bid for Star Players, in a phase that comes before any other pre-game phases.

When starting the bidding phase, first either randomly or by mutual agreement select four Star Players (add an additional two for each extra team playing). Randomly select a starting bidder, who must bid for one of the Stars, with the minimum bid being half the Star's normal cost, rounded up to the nearest 10.000 gold. Continue the bidding until both coaches have spent their 200.000 gold, although this may be supplemented from the team's treasury if desired, or until nobody can afford the minimum bid for any remaining Stars. With this method, ignore what Colleges each Star will normally play for, as here any Star will work for any College.

  • The Random Method: Firstly, the coaches must agree on how many Star Players each team gets this game - one, two or three. Then select randomly or by mutual agreement a base of two Stars, plus two Stars for each Star that the teams will get this game, so if the coaches agreed to two Stars per team, select six Stars in total. Make a set of cards featuring each of the names of the chosen Stars, shuffle the cards, and deal the chosen number of Stars to each coach (or, less fun, roll dice to see who gets who). With this method, ignore what Colleges each Star will normally play for, as here any Star will work for any College.

When using Star Players, please note the following.

Common Star Player Rules: Star Players all have two base rules in common.

  • Peaked: Star Players are at the peak of their career, and cannot earn any more SPPs.
  • Guest: Star Players are guests on your team, and cannot use Team Re-rolls.

With these principles out of the way, Dungeonbowl: AGE currently uses a list of 20 sample Star Players specifically designed for Dungeonbowl. The College distribution is devised so that each College has access to 2-3 Star Players. If you wish to expand or replace this list, either draft in any Stars you like from Blood Bowl (simply say that the Star will play for any College that can field their race), or make up your own.
